A "Sputnik" floor lamp
Probably Italy, circa 1955
A striking and unusual pair of wall lights and matching floor lamp. The floor lamp has out-swept iron arms, each terminating in maroon formica spheres and turned brass cups. Contrasted with this are smaller decorative brass arms with spiked spheres, resting on six glass rods above a similar brass receiver and out-swept iron legs. The lamp has four switches allowing for varying degrees of brightness.
The advent of the space age, and its immediate influence on design, is typically seen in mass produced items of simple materials, whereas these dramatic and entertaining lights are of a distinctly different quality. The cast iron back plates, the substantial brass body and the turned brass cups could all have been reproduced in cheaper materials, yet the designer here chose to create something more substantial.
