A 19th Century Folding Steel Campaign Armchair

Stamped Tronchon Paris

A fine and rare polished steel armchair, stamped by its maker Tronchon of Paris, and a very early example of a much-imitated form. The quality can be seen in the articulation of the joints, the finely hand-wrought scrolling arms, and that it is stamped by its maker rather than being a later mass-produced copy.

France, circa 1870
